48 years ago, John and Elizabeth Hunt recognized the potential market in Australia for fine luggage and leathergoods, and in 1975 opened the first HUNT store at the MLC Centre, Sydney. Since then, Hunt Leather have quietly expanded with stores around Australia, introducing luxury brands such as Longchamp, Tumi, Rimowa to Australia.
Now, a new iconic Hunt flagship store has opened on the George Street frontage of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) at the Rocks in Sydney.
It marks a return to the precinct for the Hunts, who had two stores in the Rocks in the late 1980s and early 90s.
“We’re so pleased to have found the perfect location for our new store. the Rocks is the perfect fit for us in terms of style, travel and heritage. No longer solely a tourist precinct, it’s a thriving extension of the CBD, with a sophisticated, attractive mix of independent designers and interesting stores, restaurants and bars. Place Management NSW have done terrific work in bringing new style and verve to the area.” - Sophie Hunt
On the western side of circular Quay, at the entrance to the Rocks precinct, the new Hunt store is part of the 2012 expansion and redevelopment of the MCA, which had occupied the Art Deco-inspired building since 1991. Formerly the home of the Maritime Services Board, the building’s location is synonymous with early Sydney trade commissary stores and international travel, a place of aesthetic and historic significance on the harbour,
With the appetite for long haul travel roaring back now there has been a renaissance in suitcases and larger bags - so in a nod to the original concept by Betty and John Hunt, the Hunt Luggage Co store will spearhead the return of luxury luggage including Tumi USA and Bric’s, alongside well-designed bags for life’s daily adventures.
A reflection of the Hunt Leather family’s passion for travel and beautiful design, with the best in luggage and business cases from around the world, alongside exclusive travel accessories from Australian makers including Axel Mano and Corban & Blair, scarves and kimonos by The Artists Label, and iconic pieces from local craftsmen Mark Honore and Mark Jones.
The Hunts look forward to welcoming you to the beautiful new store on George Street at The Rocks.
